"Soil: The Critical Zone for Land and Water Resource Management"

Invited speakers will address a range of topics on soil & land controls on water partitioning and distribution through the landscape integrating soil, rock, air, and biotic resources in the terrestrial environment.
 
Keynote speakers include:
 
Dr. Henry Lin, Pennsylvania State University, who is the leading proponent of the ‘Critical Zone’ concept which integrates processes from aquifer to treetop and across the landscape. Dr. Lin will provide an overview of the key concepts and applications of the Critical Zone.
 
Dr. Les Henry, professor-emeritus at the University of Saskatchewan, author and Grainews columnist, who has a wealth of experience with landscape and water in Saskatchewan agricultural.  Dr. Henry will exhort us to dig a little deeper - think a little broader - in understanding issues in the Critical Zone context.
 
Other presentations will address
  • Understanding the linkages between agricultural management and groundwater nitrate contamination.
  • Evaluating Risks to Water Resources from Carcass Mass Burial sites
  • How landscape relationships and concepts drive BMP performance in studies undertaken for the Watershed Evaluation of Best Management Practices (WEBs) Program.
  • The Role of Prairie Potholes in Critical Zone Processes, and a
  • Synthesis of the integrated landscape-hydrology research that has been carried out at the St Denis
  • National Wildlife Area with participation of a large number of agencies and universities. 
 
This meeting is of interest to land and resource water managers, scientists, and professionals addressing complex issues facing agriculture and other land resource industries today.  Organized by Agriculture and Agri-foods Canada with support from the University of Saskatchewan, the meeting will interest participants from a wide range of disciplines and interests.
 
A contribution of $25 (cash on meeting day) will be needed to cover costs for refreshments and meals.
